The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect

I had an unusual situation where I had gone on a vacation for a month and on returning back booted my system and found that some of my applications stopped working. Applications like MS Office (Word, Visio, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint) and even Adobe reader stopped working. It came up with the following errors. In this article I am trying to explain how these errors can be resolved. I have described different options. I hope one of the options will work for you.

Errors:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

Option 1: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package

Installing this redistributable could solve the problem

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package

Make sure to install the latest Redistributable Package.

Option 2: Using the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe)

sfc /scannow

Go to Start à All Programs à Accessories à Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. This will come up with the command prompt.

Type sfc /scannow

This command will scan for windows system files and repair them if they are corrupt.

Once you run the above command you should have a log file (cbs.log) created  at  Windows\\Logs\\CBS

This log file should have a list of files which are corrupted and which sfc.exe tool was not able to repair.

Option 3: Using System Update Readiness Tool

If you have a list of files which were not repaired by sfc.exe then you can use another tool which should repair the files, especially the manifest and policy files.

Here is the tool:  System Update Readiness Tool

This above tool can be used to repair the corrupt .manifest and policy files.

Option 4: Uninstall and Re-install the Application

If trying any of the tools mentioned above did not work, there is another way to make it work, thats what I had to do to make my application to work. I just un-installed the application in my case MS Office and re-installed it, that resolved the issue.
